| The Rotterdam Bar, Belfast's premier live music venue has been saved from demolition |
Brooks Williiams playing his 1996 song recorded in the Rotterdam's heyday. On Monday the 7th of May, 2007 The Rotterdam Bar in Belfast's Pilot Street closed, to be demolished to make way for a luxury development of 56 apartments. The leaseholders were told to remove all personal possessions as "it would be a pile of rubble by the weekend". The doors were locked , the windows shuttered and the keys confiscated. Immediately a committee was formed to try and save this gem of Belfast's cultural heritage , the home of live music in Belfast for thirty years. With Davy "Ludwig" O'Neill as the public voice, Rena Maguire as the PR guru and www.nbmcmedia.com co-ordinating the online campaign, amazingly the Rotterdam Bar re-opened only 2 months later on the 6th of July 2007. Fittingly the first man on stage was "ludwig", the last man to play before the closure.
