Why should Second-Lifers be interested in Open Sim
[Ask people in aud what they do on sl: how many in organized group, are builders, rent
land, are designer, sell items they make, use sl for rl jobs, ??]
So can they use this open source software to to run their own 3d Immersive virtual world that will look pretty much just like Second Life (depending on how skillful your designers and builders are.)
1. Just run a 3d region on your home computer to mess with - have your family, friends over for a party. Like a whole 256 x 256 region. ?? how much this relate to SL
2. If you are a designer or builder, its your private development sandbox to tryout ideas for objects, clothing, etc. Or, as the place you prototype a whole world for your clients.
3. If you want to run an on-going production virtual world for an organization, school or company that is using it for internal meetings, classes, meetings, run it on a computer inside the organizations fire wall. This can be as many regions as your computer can handle like 9 might be quite reasonable.
4. You can also build virtual worlds that are open to the public via the internet.
What software lets you use this technology.
Can use the same software client as SecondLIfe Viewer to connect to the virtural world you are creating. A better client is gonna be the Hippo viewer or the Imprudence or the defunct Meerkat viewer. Reason is these let you move your stuff between your world and SecondLife regions. More on this later from Stio.
Opensim.exe is the program you run to create a virtural world. This is the actual simulation server program. When you run this and you actually get 5 or so computer services started up which you may or may not want to learn about but don’t have to. e.g. a service to send chat back and forth, another to keep tract of inventory for each avatar, ??
[ask audiance what will happen to all your buildings etc if opensim.exe program stops running.] In addition you need a database to keep track of everything (like where would it all go when you turn the cpu off.) This will be mysqllite or MySql.
You will probably connect between the server machine and the client machines using the Internet but note that you could just as well connect over a local network (like in a classroom or office building). [ask audience how will your buddy across the room or across town tell his/her computer where your virtual world is?] answer is of course ip address but also might need to know which port on the ip address to go in through.
Could continue with the boaring details of setting up opensim but maybe better to show how fuckng amazing the use of it is. So let Stio take over.
STIO IN HERE - NEED TO LEAVE SOME TIME FOR SOME GRITTY TECH DETAILS LATER FROM ME.
Paul will cover: Three approaches to getting up and running with your own virtural world.
1. run a stand alone instance of opensim.exe
2. run a stand alone diva distro instance giving 4 regions.
3. run an instance of opensim.exe connected to a grid osgrid rather then second life grid
In any case hypergrid gived you stargate.
2. as one or more regions
As much as time permits and give urls for the HowTo links.
